Dr. Manmohan Singh's partnership with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe marked the beginning of a new chapter for both nations, one defined by a “strategic global partnership.” Abe himself referred to Dr. Singh as his “mentor or guru,” a rare tribute that speaks volumes about the respect between the two leaders.

The passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s former Prime Minister and one of the world’s foremost economists, brings with it a profound sense of loss. Dr. Singh was more than a leader; he was a catalyst who redefined India’s trajectory, not just economically but diplomatically. His vision, integrity, and commitment to India will continue to inspire generations.

In 1991, Dr. Singh, then India’s Finance Minister, became the architect of reforms that would reshape the nation’s future. He steered India out of an economic crisis, laying the foundation for liberalization, globalization, and the dynamic economy we see today. These reforms didn’t just stabilize the country—they set the stage for India to become a major player on the global stage, benefiting millions in the decades that followed.

As Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Dr. Singh’s legacy stretched beyond economic transformation. One of his most defining achievements on the global stage was his efforts to rebuild India’s relationship with Japan. After India’s 1998 nuclear tests, the country had found itself diplomatically isolated. But Dr. Singh’s quiet diplomacy and steady leadership helped end that isolation. His partnership with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe marked the beginning of a new chapter for both nations, one defined by a “strategic global partnership.” Abe himself referred to Dr. Singh as his “mentor or guru,” a rare tribute that speaks volumes about the respect between the two leaders.

This partnership bore fruit in concrete ways, especially in infrastructure development. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (Shinkansen) project stands as a lasting symbol of this bond—a project that will not only revolutionize transportation in India but also serve as a testament to Dr. Singh’s vision for the country’s modernization.

Another landmark achievement during his tenure was the India-US Civil Nuclear Agreement, also known as the India-US Nuclear Deal. Dr. Singh, along with his team of negotiators, successfully brokered an agreement that provided India access to civilian nuclear technology without the requirement of signing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). This breakthrough was a game-changer, opening doors for deeper collaboration between India and the U.S. across energy, defense, and technology sectors, and paving the way for India to become a recognized global player in the nuclear field.

While no leader is without their critics, what stands out in Dr. Singh’s legacy is his unwavering commitment to India’s growth, his profound intellect, and his personal integrity. These qualities have left an indelible mark on the country and will continue to guide India’s journey for years to come.

Dr. Manmohan Singh's contributions will forever be etched in history.
