Whether pursuing higher studies in science, technology, or the humanities, Japan presents an exciting opportunity for Indian students to expand their global perspectives and enhance their career prospects.


An important aspect of internationalization is the growing number of scholarships and financial aid options available to international students. Programs like the MEXT (Monbukagakusho) scholarship provide opportunities for students from around the world, including India, to study in Japan with significant financial support.


The Embassy of Japan in India has announced that applications for the MEXT (Japanese Government) Scholarship – 2026 under the “Research Students” category are now open. This prestigious scholarship, offered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), supports postgraduate studies in Japanese universities.


Program Overview

Applicants may choose from the following two academic tracks:

  • Doctoral Course (Ph.D.) – Duration: 3 years*

  • Master’s Course – Duration: 2 years*

An additional 6-month preparatory Japanese language program may be provided prior to the degree course for selected candidates who require language support.


Research-Focused Learning Environment

Graduate education in Japan is research-oriented, and applicants must:

  • Identify a potential academic advisor at a Japanese university.

  • Prepare a well-structured, original research plan aligned with their chosen advisor’s field of study.


Scholarship Benefits (for Doctoral Students)
  • Monthly Allowance: 145,000 yen (approx. ₹85,300)

  • Full Tuition Coverage: Includes entrance examination, admission, and tuition fees

  • Round-trip Airfare: Paid


Application Details
  • Deadline: May 13, 2025

  • Estimated Number of Selections: ~30 (based on past trends)

  • Past Applications Received: ~2,000 (previous year)
