Japan Strengthens Tech Ties with Assam Through High-Level Visit to Semiconductor Facility

Fukushiro Nukaga, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Japan, arrived in Guwahati on Saturday for a three-day visit. Nukaga led a Japanese delegation during the visit. On the first day of his Assam tour, the state government organised an event in his honour at the Assam Legislative Assembly. Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, among other dignitaries, attended the event.


During his stay, Fukushiro Nukaga also visited IIT Guwahati and the under-construction semiconductor plant at Jagiroad.

The Chief Minister spent time interacting with the visiting dignitaries during their tour of the facility.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarma described the visit as a “significant and positive development” in the context of strengthening Japanese investments in Assam. He noted that this was the fourth Japanese delegation to visit the state in a short span, highlighting the deepening cooperation between Japan and Assam.


CM Sarma emphasized the importance of sustained engagement between Japanese institutions and the Government of Assam. He welcomed Japan’s decision to lift all restrictions on tourist travel to the state and acknowledged Japan’s ongoing support in key sectors including health and infrastructure.


Underscoring Japan's global leadership in semiconductor technology, the Chief Minister said the country’s involvement in Assam’s semiconductor sector would boost the region’s technological capacity, strengthen supply chains, and accelerate economic growth. He expressed confidence that the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility would provide significant employment opportunities for local youth, enabling them to find gainful employment within the state.


The event was also attended by Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika, Industries & Commerce Minister Bimal Bora, Sports & Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa, Project Head of the Tata Semiconductor facility Asish Mishra, senior government officials, and other dignitaries.
