In a landmark visit set to boost India-Japan science and technology cooperation, Nobel Laureate and lithium-ion battery inventor Dr. Akira Yoshino will make his first trip to India in October 2025. His visit is a key highlight of the International Conference on Frontier Areas of Science & Technology (ICFAST 2025), a major science and education seminar co-hosted by the Indian JSPS Alumni Association (IJAA) and NIT Calicut.

A Pioneer of Sustainable Technology
As a 2019 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Dr. Yoshino is globally recognized for his pivotal contributions to the development of the lithium-ion battery. Along with his co-laureates, Dr. Stanley Whittingham and Dr. John Goodenough, his work revolutionized how energy is stored, powering the modern world of mobile electronics and accelerating the shift toward sustainable solutions like electric vehicles (EVs) and large-scale renewable energy storage.
Dr. Yoshino's specific achievement of inventing the world's first lithium-ion battery and holding over 60 patents in the technology has placed him at the forefront of clean energy innovation.
Keynote Address and Vision for a Sustainable Future
During his visit, Dr. Yoshino will deliver a keynote address at ICFAST 2025 on October 10–11 at NIT Calicut, Kerala. He will share his insights and vision for the future of technology and society.
In a past interaction with the media, Dr. Yoshino highlighted the battery's role in creating a sustainable society mentioned "Lithium-ion batteries have made today’s mobile IT society a reality. And in the future, they will play a central role in building a sustainable society. He added, "Although lithium-ion batteries alone will not solve all environmental problems, when combined with other new innovations, like artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things, they will be central to building a sustainable society."
He also offered inspiring advice to young people aspiring to be scientists, "Be curious and use your energy to develop the skills, the confidence and the knowledge to make the big discoveries and the groundbreaking inventions that will mark this century"
Advancing India-Japan Academic and Research Partnerships
This visit is especially significant as it marks the 40th Anniversary of India–Japan Science & Technology Cooperation and aligns with the India–Japan Science, Technology, and Innovation Year 2025. The conference aims to foster academic and research collaborations in advanced scientific fields.
"As India and Japan celebrate 2025 as the India–Japan Science, Technology, and Innovation Year, IJAA is honored to organize this landmark seminar. We are especially delighted to welcome Dr. Akira Yoshino to India for the first time. ICFAST 2025 will be a celebration of four decades of S&T cooperation and a launchpad for the next era of collaborations," said Prof. D. Sakthi Kumar, Chairman of IJAA.
ICFAST 2025 will serve as a hub for breakthrough research exchanges and joint projects, bringing together scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders to reinforce a shared vision for sustainable technology and educational advancement.
