Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s Visit to Japan Reinforces Strategic Partnership and Shared Commitment to Global Security

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri undertook an official visit to Japan on 22nd May to engage with senior leaders of the Government of Japan, reaffirming the deep-rooted and multi-dimensional India-Japan strategic partnership.

In his meeting with Vice Foreign Minister Takehiro Funakoshi, both sides conducted a comprehensive review of the bilateral relations between India and Japan. Discussions covered a broad range of strategic areas, including political dialogue, defence and security cooperation, economic engagement, trade and investment, and people-to-people ties. They also exchanged views on key regional and global security challenges.


Misri also met with Japan’s National Security Advisor Masataka Okano and Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Hiroyuki Namazu. These meetings delved into Indo-Pacific regional dynamics, global counter-terrorism efforts, and advancing mutual foreign policy priorities.

During the visit, Foreign Secretary delivered the Spotlight Address at the 2nd Raisina Tokyo Dialogue, organized by the Observer Research Foundation, ORF America, Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), and Keizai Doyukai. His address emphasized the critical role of India-Japan cooperation in ensuring a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific, and strengthening economic security and technological innovation.


The visit served as another milestone in the regular exchange of high-level delegations, underscoring the shared commitment to elevating the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Foreign Secretary Misri also expressed gratitude for Japan’s support and solidarity following the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Both sides reaffirmed their zero-tolerance policy on terrorism and reiterated the importance of dismantling terrorist infrastructure and holding perpetrators accountable.


This visit marks another significant step in enhancing India-Japan bilateral relations, aligning efforts on regional stability, economic resilience, and counter-terrorism cooperation in the evolving geopolitical landscape.
