Reflecting National Identity and Global Ambitions
The celebrations commenced with a moving Imperial court music (gagaku) performance by the Imperial Household Agency Music Department, followed by the Japanese national anthem sung by soprano Ayano Nonomura. Prime Minister Ishiba, in the gracious presence of Their Imperial Highnesses Crown Prince and Crown Princess, attended the official ceremony and the event for "Japan Day" at Expo 2025. PM Ishiba delivered an address in his capacity as Honorary Chairperson of Expo 2025.

The official flag-raising ceremony was witnessed by The Imperial Highnesses Crown Prince and Crown Princess. Crown Prince Akishino emphasized the unifying power of Japanese culture, particularly anime and manga, which "transcend borders and connect many people worldwide." Prime Minister Ishiba echoed this sentiment, highlighting the Expo’s role in shaping a united global future through shared innovation and humanity.

Manga Meets Dance: The Main Stage Attraction
The headline performance, titled "The Brilliance of Life, and to the World," showcased a breathtaking fusion of manga-style visuals and contemporary dance, directed by Naoki Iimuro and produced by Wally Kinoshita, known for his work on the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. The narrative followed a girl named Sakura and a large puppet, symbolizing the spirit of manga.
Using projection mapping, speech bubbles, manga panels, and synchronized choreography, the performance explored life’s resilience and interconnectedness. The beloved Expo mascot Myaku-Myaku starred in a deeply emotional story arc that questioned the role of conflict in civilization, ending with a heartfelt plea for empathy and understanding.
Honoring History and Healing
Norika Fujiwara, actress and honorary director of the Japan Pavilion, delivered a touching message referencing the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995. Holding origami gifted by the performers, she urged the audience to find strength in unity: “Through each person’s thoughts and wishes, we can come together and shine brightly.”
The event concluded with a powerful three-song set by acclaimed singer Misia, whose emotional delivery of hits like "Ashita e" and "Ai no Katachi" left the audience inspired. Wearing a floral gown in line with the day's blooming theme, Misia epitomized Japan's message of growth, hope, and renewal.
Cultural Icons and Festive Atmosphere
Following the stage program, a festive parade beneath the Grand Ring featured appearances by Hello Kitty, regional mascot Kumamon, and performers in traditional kimono, drawing cheers from thousands of visitors.
Expo 2025 Osaka: Momentum Builds
With attendance surpassing 10 million visitors, Japan Day reflected Expo 2025's global draw and Japan's ability to host world-class international events. The Expo continues to serve as a platform for discussing sustainable development goals (SDGs), digital transformation, and cultural diplomacy.
Despite early challenges, including extreme heat and logistical hurdles, the Expo is on track to meet its 28.2 million visitor target, cementing its status as a defining global event of the decade.
