Braintree International School in Bongaigaon has become the first high school in Assam to introduce the JLPT N5 programme in partnership with JECI. Offered free of cost to 115 students, the initiative creates a structured pathway from school education to Japanese universities, strengthening India–Japan educational cooperation.

A significant milestone in JLPT N5 in Assam has been achieved with the launch of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N5 programme at Braintree International School in Bongaigaon. Introduced by the Japan Education Center and Information Foundation (JECI) through its JHUB Excellence Skill Center for K-12 Schools, the initiative makes Braintree International School the first high school in Assam to offer structured Japanese language education leading to the internationally recognised JLPT certification.
The pioneering programme has enrolled 115 students and is being offered entirely free of cost, reflecting JECI's commitment to expanding access to global education while strengthening the growing India–Japan education partnership.
The initiative is more than the introduction of a foreign language curriculum. It represents a long-term investment in preparing young learners for a future where multilingual skills, cross-cultural competence, and international academic mobility are increasingly essential. By introducing Japanese language learning at the school level, JECI and Braintree International School are laying the foundation for stronger educational and people-to-people ties between India and Japan.

Building a Long-Term Academic Pathway
Unlike short-term language courses, the programme has been designed as a structured academic pathway. Students begin learning Japanese from Grade 5, progressing systematically towards JLPT N3 by the completion of Grade 9. This early foundation also prepares learners for the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), creating a clear route for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate studies at Japanese universities after completing Class XII.
This carefully planned progression enables students to develop language proficiency at an age when language acquisition is most effective. Beyond grammar and vocabulary, students gain exposure to Japanese culture, traditions, values, and communication styles—skills that are increasingly valuable in today's interconnected world.
Why JLPT Matters
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the world's most widely recognised certification for Japanese language skills. Beginning with JLPT N5 provides students with a strong foundation in reading, listening, vocabulary, and everyday communication before advancing to higher levels of proficiency.
As India and Japan continue to deepen cooperation across manufacturing, semiconductors, technology, healthcare, research, tourism, and innovation, demand for professionals with Japanese language skills continues to grow. Students who begin learning early are better positioned to access scholarships, internships, higher education opportunities, and careers connected to Japan's expanding engagement with India.
For many students, mastering Japanese opens doors not only to employment but also to cultural exchange and lifelong international networks.
A Vision for Global Education
The programme represents far more than language instruction. It is designed to cultivate globally minded students who are prepared to participate in international academic exchanges and contribute meaningfully in multicultural environments.
By offering the programme entirely free of charge, JECI has removed financial barriers that often limit access to international education opportunities. Such initiatives complement the objectives of India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages multilingual learning, internationalisation of education, and the development of global competencies among students.
Emphasising the transformative impact of introducing Japanese language education at an early stage, Capt. Raj Adhikary, Founder & CEO of JECI, said: "When students begin learning Japanese at the school level, they don't just acquire a language—they begin building a lifelong bridge to Japan through education, culture, innovation, and opportunity."

His remarks reflect JECI's broader mission of creating sustainable educational pathways that empower young Indians to access world-class learning opportunities while fostering enduring connections between the people of India and Japan.
The inclusion of Northeast India in this educational movement is particularly significant. Assam has increasingly emerged as an important gateway for international cooperation, and this initiative demonstrates how schools in the region can play a leading role in strengthening educational diplomacy between the two countries.
A Shared Commitment to Student Success
Speaking on the occasion, R.K. Chaudhury, Founder of Braintree International School, described the initiative as a transformative milestone for the institution. "As founder of Braintree International School, I am proud that, in partnership with JECI, we are the first school in Assam, India, to offer JLPT N5. Early access to JLPT pathways will empower our students with language skills, cross-cultural understanding and the confidence to pursue higher studies and careers in Japan and beyond. This initiative, offered free by JECI, is a gift to our students and community and a testament to what schools, families and international partners can achieve together to broaden young minds and opportunities."

His remarks underscore the school's vision of preparing students not only for academic excellence but also for global citizenship. By embracing Japanese language education at an early stage, Braintree International School is setting a precedent for other schools in Assam and across Northeast India.
Strengthening India–Japan Educational Cooperation
Educational collaboration has emerged as one of the strongest pillars of the evolving India–Japan strategic partnership. Alongside cooperation in infrastructure, technology, digital innovation, manufacturing, and economic development, both countries have increasingly recognised the importance of investing in people-to-people exchanges through education, language learning, and academic mobility.
Initiatives such as the JLPT N5 in Assam programme contribute directly to this vision by creating pathways for Indian students to pursue Study in Japan opportunities and engage more deeply with Japanese society. They also help develop a future workforce equipped with the language skills and cultural understanding needed to support closer bilateral cooperation.
For Assam, the programme marks a significant educational milestone that could inspire other schools across the state and the wider Northeast region to integrate Japanese language education into their academic offerings.
Looking Ahead
The launch of the JLPT N5 in Assam programme represents the beginning of a new chapter in Japanese language education in India. By combining early language learning with a structured progression towards JLPT N3 and EJU preparation, JECI and Braintree International School have created a model that can be replicated by schools across the country.
As India and Japan continue to deepen their partnership, initiatives like this demonstrate how education can serve as one of the most powerful instruments for building mutual understanding and expanding opportunities for future generations.
For the 115 students taking their first steps into the Japanese language, this programme represents far more than an additional subject in the classroom. It is the beginning of a journey towards international education, cultural exchange, and global careers.
In doing so, JECI and Braintree International School are not merely teaching a language—they are building lasting educational bridges between India and Japan, one student at a time.
