As Japan continues to seek high-quality, sustainable and globally sourced products, India is making a renewed push to strengthen its presence in one of Asia's most sophisticated consumer markets. The third edition of the India Fashion & Lifestyle Show – The India Sourcing Show was inaugurated on 17 June 2026 at Mydome Osaka, bringing together Indian exporters, Japanese buyers, policymakers and trade promotion organizations under one roof. More than just a trade exhibition, the event reflects the growing ambition of both India and Japan to deepen economic engagement through commerce, innovation and long-term business partnerships.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary (Textiles), Government of India, and Chandru Appar, Consul General of India in Osaka-Kobe in the presence of senior officials from the Ministry of Textiles, the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), and industry representatives.

Running from 17 to 19 June, the exhibition features 50 Indian companies showcasing a diverse range of products including textiles, apparel, fashion accessories, home furnishings, handicrafts, lifestyle products and contemporary consumer goods.

Building Bridges Between Indian Producers and Japanese Buyers

Addressing the gathering, Consul General Chandru Appar highlighted the importance of creating direct business connections between Indian manufacturers and Japanese importers. He praised FIEO's continued efforts to strengthen India-Japan economic engagement and noted that platforms such as the India Fashion & Lifestyle Show serve as an effective bridge connecting Indian exporters with Japanese distributors, retailers and sourcing companies.

His remarks underscored a broader reality. While political and strategic ties between India and Japan have reached unprecedented levels, trade volumes still have significant room for expansion. Business-to-business engagement remains one of the most effective ways to convert diplomatic goodwill into commercial opportunities.

For many Japanese buyers attending the exhibition, the event offers a chance to discover suppliers capable of meeting Japan's exacting standards of quality, reliability and consistency. For Indian exporters, it provides valuable insights into consumer preferences, product trends and business culture in Japan.

Japan: A Market of Opportunity and High Expectations

Japan remains one of the world's largest consumer markets and a country known for its appreciation of craftsmanship, attention to detail and product quality. These characteristics align naturally with many of India's strengths, particularly in textiles, handicrafts and lifestyle products. Yet despite India's strong manufacturing base and growing export capabilities, Japan remains a relatively underpenetrated market for Indian textile exports.

Consul General Chandru Appar highlighted the importance of creating direct business connections between Indian manufacturers and Japanese importers.

During the event, Suvidh Shah, Additional Director General, FIEO, highlighted this untapped potential.

India exports approximately USD 37 billion worth of textile products globally, but Japan accounts for only about 1 percent of that figure. According to Shah, exhibitions such as the India Fashion & Lifestyle Show provide an important opportunity for Indian exporters to identify new buyers, understand market expectations and develop long-term relationships with Japanese businesses.

His observation points to both a challenge and an opportunity. India's textile sector has achieved impressive success in markets such as the United States, Europe and the Middle East. However, penetrating the Japanese market often requires a different approach—one built on patience, trust, quality assurance and sustained engagement.

Government Support for Expanding Global Market Access

During her visit to the exhibition, Secretary (Textiles) Neelam Shami Rao expressed appreciation for the efforts made by FIEO and the Japan India Industry Promotion Association (JIIPA) in organizing the event.

She commended the quality and diversity of products on display and reaffirmed the Government of India's commitment to supporting exporters as they expand into international markets.

The Indian government has increasingly emphasized export competitiveness as a key pillar of economic growth. Initiatives aimed at improving manufacturing standards, promoting sustainability, supporting MSMEs and enhancing market access are all designed to help Indian companies compete more effectively in global markets.

Events such as the India Fashion & Lifestyle Show complement these efforts by providing a direct platform where exporters can interact with overseas buyers, understand market requirements and explore commercial opportunities firsthand.

Why the Japan Opportunity Matters

The India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which came into force in 2011, provides a strong framework for trade and investment cooperation. Yet many industry observers believe the full potential of the agreement remains untapped, particularly in sectors such as textiles, fashion and lifestyle products.

Japanese consumers are increasingly seeking products that combine quality, sustainability and authentic craftsmanship. These are areas where India possesses considerable advantages. From handwoven textiles and natural fibre products to artisanal home décor and environmentally responsible fashion, Indian companies are well positioned to cater to evolving consumer preferences in Japan.

Moreover, as global supply chains continue to diversify, Japanese companies are looking beyond traditional sourcing destinations. India's growing manufacturing ecosystem, improving logistics infrastructure and expanding focus on quality standards make it an increasingly attractive sourcing partner.

Sustainability and Natural Fibres Create New Opportunities

One of the most promising areas for future collaboration lies in sustainable textiles and natural fibres.

Japanese consumers are among the most environmentally conscious in the world, creating demand for eco-friendly materials, ethically produced goods and products with strong sustainability credentials.

India's expertise in cotton, silk, jute, bamboo, organic textiles and handcrafted products aligns well with these market trends. The presence of senior officials from the Ministry of Textiles, including representatives from the Natural Fibre Bureau, also highlights India's intention to position itself as a reliable supplier of sustainable and innovative textile solutions.

As sustainability becomes a defining factor in global purchasing decisions, Indian exporters have an opportunity to differentiate themselves through responsible manufacturing practices and traceable supply chains.

FIEO and JIIPA Strengthen India-Japan Commercial Partnerships

Trade promotion organizations often work behind the scenes, but their contribution is critical in transforming potential opportunities into tangible business outcomes. The Federation of Indian Export Organisations, with support from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and DGFT, has consistently played a leading role in helping Indian exporters explore new markets and establish international business connections.

Its collaboration with JIIPA has enabled the India Fashion & Lifestyle Show to evolve into an important platform for commercial engagement between India and Japan. Beyond product displays, such exhibitions facilitate buyer-seller meetings, market intelligence sharing, networking opportunities and relationship building—elements that are particularly important in the Japanese business environment, where trust and long-term commitment are highly valued.

Looking Ahead

The India Fashion & Lifestyle Show Osaka 2026 arrives at a time when India and Japan are seeking to broaden the scope of their partnership beyond traditional sectors and create new engines of economic growth.

While India's textile exports have already established a strong global footprint, Japan represents a market with significant untapped potential. Closing the gap between India's export capabilities and its current market share in Japan will require sustained engagement, greater market understanding and continued collaboration between governments, industry bodies and businesses.

"At a time when global supply chains are evolving and demand for sustainable, high-quality products is growing, these platforms create meaningful opportunities for Indian exporters and Japanese buyers to build long-term partnerships," said Prashant Godghate, Chairman of the Japan India Industry Promotion Association (JIIPA).

He added, "Through sustained engagement, carefully curated trade events and targeted B2B matchmaking, JIIPA is committed to transforming business potential into tangible outcomes, strengthening bilateral textile trade and contributing to the broader economic partnership between India and Japan."

Events such as the India Fashion & Lifestyle Show are an important step in that direction. They not only showcase India's manufacturing excellence and creative talent but also create the personal connections that often form the foundation of successful international trade relationships.

As Indian exporters explore new opportunities in Japan and Japanese buyers discover the diversity of products that India has to offer, the exhibition serves as a reminder that economic partnerships are ultimately built not just through agreements and policies, but through people, businesses and shared opportunities.

For India and Japan, Osaka 2026 may well be another milestone in a partnership that continues to grow stronger with each passing year.
