Japan Month 2026: Embassy of Japan Announces Third Edition to Deepen India-Japan Ties

Japan Month 2026 is set to strengthen India–Japan relations through an extensive calendar of trade, investment, education and cultural events. Building on the success of its previous editions, the Embassy of Japan in India is inviting businesses, educational institutions and cultural organizations to become part of this nationwide initiative that celebrates one of Asia's most dynamic strategic partnerships.

Japan Month 2026 aims to strengthen India–Japan ties through nationwide events spanning business, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges.

The Embassy of Japan in India has designated September–October 2026 as "Japan Month," marking the third edition of an initiative aimed at deepening bilateral relations between India and Japan across a wide range of areas, including security, economics, and culture. During the two-month window, the Embassy plans to hold an intensive schedule of seminars, symposia, and exhibitions focused on trade, investment, cultural exchange, and people-to-people ties between the two nations.

A Fast-Growing Tradition

The modern "Japan Month" format is a relatively young but fast-growing addition to the India-Japan diplomatic calendar. The Embassy launched the current comprehensive version — spanning economics, education, and culture in a single coordinated program — in the autumn of 2024. That inaugural edition drew more than 60 registered activities across the country, including debut of Mela! Mela! Anime Japan festival in Delhi and was formally opened by then-Ambassador Hiroshi Suzuki at a reception held at his residence, bringing together event organizers, Indian government representatives, business leaders, and cultural organizations under one roof.

At that opening, chief guest Ambassador H.K. Singh, India's former envoy to Japan, welcomed the initiative as a natural extension of a relationship he described as resting on shared democratic values and complementary market economies between two Asian nations.

It's worth noting that this current format is distinct from the Embassy's earlier "Japan Cultural Month," held in 2008, which was a only culture-focused observance. The 2024-onward iteration of Japan Month is broader by design, deliberately bringing trade and investment, security dialogue, education, and cultural programming together under a single banner.

Japan Month 2025: A Bigger Second Edition

The 2025 edition significantly expanded on the inaugural year, with nearly 50+ registered events running from September through late November across cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, and Kolkata, and touching sectors from business and academia to sport and traditional arts.

Japan Month 2025 Opening Ceremony at the Embassy of Japan in India brought together diplomats, business leaders and cultural enthusiasts to celebrate the growing India–Japan partnership. The event featured Ambassador Keiichi Ono's inaugural address, a traditional Ryūrei-style Japanese tea ceremony, cultural exchanges, and networking, highlighting the enduring bonds of friendship, culture and economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Opening Ceremony of Japan Month 2025 was hosted by Ambassador Keiichi Ono at the Embassy of Japan in India, with Ambassador Sibi George as Guest of Honour. The evening featured a soulful koto performance by Ms. Shimizu, an insightful talk by an Indian anime voice actor, and a graceful Ryūrei-style tea gathering led by Ambassador Ono and tea instructor Mrs. Hara — celebrating the enduring cultural and people-to-people bonds between Japan and India.

Highlights included the 2nd edition of Mela! Mela! Anime Japan festival in Delhi, an Executive Networking Dinner for India-Japan hosted by JBIC, an Ikebana demonstration and workshop by a master instructor from the Sogetsu School's Tokyo headquarters, a JICA Chair session at O.P. Jindal Global University, IIT Hyderabad's Japan Career Day and Japan Academic Day, a site visit tour of the Dholera industrial region organized with JBIC and JETRO, the Japan-India Maitri Golf Cup, and a string of cultural programs — from Japanese ink-painting and Sashiko embroidery exhibitions to a "Hope for Peace" origami crane project — run by the Ship for World Youth Alumni Association India (SWYAA-India) in schools and community centers across Delhi and Patna.

The breadth of the 2025 calendar underscored how quickly Japan Month has grown from a single opening reception into a nationwide, multi-sector program.

What's Planned for 2026

Building on that foundation, the 2026 edition will again bring together a wide array of stakeholders for events centered on trade, investment, cultural exchange, and educational cooperation. As with the previous editions, the Embassy is positioning Japan Month as both a platform for exploring new business opportunities and a celebration of the cultural bonds connecting the two countries. This will be the second Japan Month held fully under the tenure of Ambassador Keiichi Ono, who took over as Ambassador of Japan to India and Bhutan in October 2024.

Call for Participation

The Embassy is inviting Indian and Japanese companies, industry bodies, cultural organizations, and educational institutions to register events as part of Japan Month 2026. Organizations interested in cooperating on this project are asked to apply in accordance with the Embassy's published Participation Guidelines, available on the official Embassy of Japan in India website.

Support for Registered Events

Once an event is registered and approved, participating organizers receive a package of support from the Embassy, including:

- Use of the official Japan Month logo on promotional and PR materials, along with guidance on publicity dos and don'ts

- A listing of the event on the Embassy of Japan's official website

- Promotion of the event across the Embassy's social media (SNS) accounts

- Embassy assistance with event-related consultations, including, where feasible, embassy attendance or an official greeting

Why It Matters

Three editions in, Japan Month has evolved into a genuine, nationwide platform for Indian and Japanese organizations to collaborate on trade, cultural, and educational programming — and to do so with the Embassy's institutional backing and visibility. For companies and organizations looking to deepen engagement with Japan, the 2026 edition offers a structured, low-friction way to plug into that momentum.

Organizations interested in participating can find full details, including the Participation Guidelines and post-registration support terms, on the Embassy of Japan in India's official website.
